Demographic information is valuable and yes while much of the info is bogus, that doesn't remove the desire for it. The hope I'm sure is that the number of real users will make it worth it. Additionally, why do you only hate registering for newspapers? Why do I have to register for forums? For Twitter? For anything? You don't seem to have a problem registering for other internet sites/services/time wasters, what makes one more site asking for it any more annoying?
